Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
HI,
I downloaded VB onto my windows 64bit machine. Installed windows vista 32b virtual machine, to run software which won't run on 64b.
However, I learned that I need vista cds which I don't have.
I uninstalled my VB-oracle software, only to realize the machine was still there!
So I reinstalled the software and can see the machine now.
Could you please tell me how I may safely unsintall the machine, software, and anything related, so regain the memory and ram space, as if I hadn't underaken this project at all!
When I remove the machine, it says, "Deletion of all files belonging to the VM is currently disabled on windows/x64 to prevent a crash. That will be fixed in the next release."
Thanks very much!
E.

If you have not installed an operating system then all you need to do is remove the program. If you want the easiest way to take the machine back to the original state then use the Windows system restore to take the machine back in time to where you had not installed the program.

thanks! I did not save windows, so can't restore it to an earlier point.
you know how when you download Virtual Box, you've to select a system? I chose that to be vista 32. So Yes I have one virtual machine.

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
I did system restore, and it took away the oracle software, same as I would have done on an uninstall. But, the virtual machine is still there.
If I got under user, I see the virtual box and virtual machine folders and the vdi file. How do I remove the virtual machine and the memory allocation 20GB?
Thanks so much!

Dirk.
When I began using computers about 15-17 yrs back, I would delete the folders I saw and learned that they don't always effectively delete software and can disable something else, depending on how it was configured.
I'd be so grateful if anyone can tell me how to delete virtual box and my one virtual machine from my computer.
- I tried windows restore, didn't work.
- Tried removing the machine, doesn't work as my computer has windows 7 64 bit.
- Uninstalled the oracle software but ofcourse that only took away the software, not the virtual machine.
CALLING ALL EXPERTS - please help! Thank you

Where is your problem.
If i understand you right, VBOX is uninstalled.
So go to your own directory (computer) and delete the Directorys with VBOX Content. That was it.

Stefan, thanks.
Even if I go under file user, delete virtual box and virtual machine (in recycle bin, and restart the computer), the 23 GB allocated to my C drive is not added back. It's still taking up that memory somehow. I'm runnning windows 7 64 bit. Is there some other way to remove the virtual machine?

Wow.
The space is freed up. (Does this also take care of 512 RAM allocation?)
Big hug for your help!

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
Hello there.
The latest update 4.1.0 seems to have fixed the above-mentioned bug but for me only partially. For the moment I have no VM's installed and File -> Virtual Media Manager can't see any Hard Disks
but they are still there (+ a few other associated smaller files).
ubuntu101064.vdi 8GB
ubuntu1104.vdi 4GB
Now is the question: Which is the best way of getting rid of them? I can think of three possible solutions.
1. Delete the respective folders ubuntu101064 and ubuntu1104. Feels a bit ugly but perhaps it's "safe" as VirtualBox doesn't seem to be aware of their existence.
2. Make VirtualBox aware of their presence and delete them but I don't know if that's possible. Can't see any option in File -> Virtual Media Manager to do that.
3. Reinstall both ubuntu1010 and ubuntu1104 and then point to these old vdi's rather than installing new ones. And if that's successful delete them afterwards.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
I believe you need to completely delete the folder in Windows that contains the VDIs, after you uninstall virtualbox. The reason removing virtualbox or the VMs from its UI will not delete the VDI, for this is to prevent VDIs and the data they contain from being accidentally deleted by uninstalling virtualbox, or by accidentally removing them from the virtualbox UI. However they can be easily deleted from Windows Explorer, just removing them from the Virtualbox UI or uninstalling virtualbox should not remove the VDIs to prevent the VDIs from being accidentally deleted. The Virtualbox UI and uninstaller does not contain code to delete the VDIs and that is smart, it would be far too risky since they could be accidentally deleted, but they can be deleted with a second step by just deleting the files manually. This is the way things should be as VDIs can contain important data, we dont want users to accidentally delete them, but you can easily delete them by just deleting them with Windows explorer. This provides double confirmation to assure that the user really does want to delete the VDIs That will take care of our problem, and reclaim the disk space.

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
the directory you need to delete is .VirtualBox usually under C:/Users/<MyUsername> . Deleting this will get rid of the VDIs. Virtualbox uninstaller or UI will never delete these. THIS IS NOT A BUG. It is on purpose and it is smart. It is best to require the user to manually delete this as to avoid VDIs which can contain a lot of important data from being accidentally deleted. However they can be deleted easily using Windows explorer,

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
OK, I have now deleted the VDI's in explorer and it seems to have worked OK.
I probably posted this question in the wrong thread because what I'm talking about is/was indeed a bug.
"Deletion of all files belonging to the VM is currently disabled on Windows/x64 to prevent a crash. That will be fixed in the next release."
That was the message I was getting for the last 3 updates of VB, then finally it was fixed with the 4.1 update.
And I do think you can remove the VDI's from inside the VB UI. If you look at the Virtual Media Manager it does provide that function.
The problem for me was that it couldn't find the VDI's and probably didn't offer me to look for them as I for the moment didn't have any VM's that I could attached them to.
Anyway, all is well. Thank you for taking the time.

Re: Deleting VM and VB - win 7, 64 bit
i was unclear as to whether that remove thing deleted it from the VM configuration or from the hard drive. I thought it was from the VM and it would not delete it from the hard drive, but i may be wrong about that one. It would be smart to just have that button remove it from the VM but require a manual delete by the user to get rid of the actual file, to avoid accidental deletions.
